Weil Will Pay 1Ls To Learn Python, Not Doc Review

Code on a computer screen, the kind of work in the Weil AI summer program

Weil will take a select group of 1Ls next summer and embed them in its LASER AI team for ten weeks to learn Python, build a neural network and help develop legal software. Do well and you get a 2L summer offer the following year. No coding background required, which is either generous or a sign of how much the firm expects to teach.

In-house readers should pay attention for a selfish reason. The Weil AI summer program is a bet that the junior associate of 2030 builds tools rather than bills hours on doc review. Somebody will eventually price that work, and it will be you negotiating it. Our future-proofing guide covers the in-house side of that shift.

“Over the course of the 10-week program, they will work on active legal projects, learn Python from the ground up, build a neural network and explore the technologies underlying the large language models increasingly used in legal practice.”
