Microsoft just offered voluntary buyouts to up to 60,000 people, more than a quarter of its roughly 223,000 employees, and the lawyers are not exempt. Per The Verge’s sources, corporate, external and legal affairs are partially participating. Translation: some of Microsoft’s own in-house lawyers now have a decision to make.
The Microsoft buyouts are a layoff with better manners. Nobody is pushed, everybody eligible is invited to think it over, and it lands just months after 4,800 people were laid off. If you work in a big tech legal department, this is a good week to update the resume and think hard about your next career move. And if you are on the outside looking in, plenty of companies are still hiring in-house counsel… just maybe not in Redmond.
