Replaced By AI, Rehired At A Premium: Meet AI Rebounding

Wooden boomerang for a post on AI rebounding

Ginger Christ reports for HR Dive on a new SHL survey with a name for something many lawyers suspected: “AI rebounding.” Companies cut people for AI, the AI disappoints, and the company calls the people back. Amazon, Ford and Klarna are named. Nearly 1 in 5 US workers say they have seen it firsthand, and the ones who get the call want more money, job security and straight answers about AI.

Legal departments should read this twice. The layoff decision, the rehire offer and any promises about job security all land on employment counsel, which helps explain the steady demand for employment counsel jobs. And if your own team is being trimmed for an AI tool that has not proved itself yet, our guide to future-proofing your in-house role is worth a look. Earlier  we noted that AI is taking the fun work first. Now it may be costing extra on the way back, too.

“SHL’s report found that 51% of workers would demand a “substantial” raise to return, 42% would need a guarantee about their job security, and 4 in 10 would want “full transparency” about AI’s use in their position.”
