Legal search firm Sartori & Partners has posted its 2026 Houston in-house counsel salary page, and the headline is not the sticker. It is what the sticker buys. Total cash runs about $165,000 to $420,000 by seniority. General counsel and CLO base sits at $320,000 to $420,000, with a 30% to 40% bonus on top and equity on top of that. Then Texas skips the state wage tax, and living costs run 7% below the national urban average.
So a Houston offer that looks thin next to Boston or Chicago can win on take-home. Sartori says 63% of the senior counsel and AGCs it interviewed who compared cities let after-tax pay decide. We saw the flip side in the D.C. general counsel pay numbers. Before you compare offers, read our in-house counsel salaries guide, then browse Houston legal jobs.
As Sartori puts it: “A $220,000 Houston senior counsel package often clears more real dollars than the same sticker in Boston or Chicago once Texas’s zero wage tax and a metro cost of living 7% below the national urban average are applied.”
