BuzzFeed’s Top Lawyer Quits; No Severance, No Successor

Empty boardroom chairs after the BuzzFeed chief legal officer resigns

BuzzFeed’s chief legal officer, David Arroyo, is heading for the exit. He told the company on October 19 that he is leaving, effective November 6. That’s under three weeks of notice for the top lawyer at a public company. The 8-K includes the standard line that there was no disagreement with the company. It also notes, a little pointedly, that he gets no severance.

No successor has been named. Until one turns up, the rest of the legal team absorbs his job, so somebody’s deputy is in for a busy holiday season. For lawyers eyeing the top seat, a sudden opening like this is how becoming a general counsel often happens: fast, and to whoever is already in the room.

“On October 19, 2026, David Arroyo announced his resignation as Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of BuzzFeed, Inc. (the “Company”), effective November 6, 2026, in order to pursue other opportunities outside of the Company.”
