It doesn’t always work. I was in-house at a Fortune 200 company for almost 15 years, during which time I developed two additional specialties beyond the specialty I was hired for. I used to joke that [company] had groomed me into a lawyer who would never be as useful to anyone as I was to them. But after a series of reorganizations and a new manager I was out anyway. I think it is vital to learn to navigate law department politics; it’s not enough that your clients love and respect you. Also, it is a worthwhile strategy (if you like your current company) to seek opportunities within the business.
