In Australia, women lawyers are more successful in-house than in private practice. Does the data hold for other jurisdictions?
“Women are achieving greater success climbing the corporate ladder as in-house counsel than in gaining partnership at law firms. Nearly double the number of women are in these peak governance/legal roles in companies on the ASX100 than in partnership, and four times the number of silks. According to a study of diversity in the most senior legal roles in the top 100 Australian Securities Exchange listed companies, there were 62 male chief legal officers compared with 38 women.Parity of gender in top in-house roles is increasing while growth in the number of women in partnership at law firms has stagnated at 24 per cent.”
